Briley, John: "CRY FREEDOM"

John Briley was born in Kalmzooo, Michigan.
After obtaining a BA and MA from the University of Michigan, he studied for a PhD in Elizabethan Drama at the University of Birmingham.
There he wrote for television and films for MGM, UK.
He also wrote and directed two comedies in London's West End Published a novel of nuclear weapons "The Last Dance".
He is married and has four children. Now he lives in Spain.

Setting:
The story takes place in various cities in South Africa:
· East London - a provincial port city
· Cape Town
· King Williams Town
· Black townships
Black people live in illegal townships, they have no rights and are
Werbung
"controlled" by the white.
But they start to protest against this way of living and treatment and apply for freedom for everybody as the country belongs to both, black and white people.

Plot:
Donald Woods publishes an edition of a police attack in an illegal black township in Cape Town, which produced an explosive reaction all over the country.
He meets Steve Biko at his banning area in King Williams Town and after talking about their opinions of black and white in South Africa, a kind of friendship begins.

Biko shows him the black townships and how people live there.
Woods meet's Biko's friends and after that he hires two black reporters, Mapetla and Tenjy. Biko takes him to an illegal meeting where he can hear Biko speaking about his ideas that black and white people should live together in freedom. Biko is cached by the police and has to show up at the Court in Pretoria.

The police enters Biko's house illegally during one night, and Woods informs Kruger, the Minister of Police, of this operation. Krueger promises Woods to prosecute this matter, but on the contrary Woods had to go court for not naming the witness.

The police warrant the two black reporters, one, Mapetla died in prison. During a road control the police catches Steve Biko. He is treated by the police in such a bad way that he died on the way to the hospital. Biko's death caused protests in black townships all over the country.

Woods wants to inquest on Biko's death and after finding out the reason he becomes banned as well. During this time of banning Woods writes a book about Steve Biko and wants to publish it by smuggling it out of the country. He plans to escape on New Year's evening with Father Kani, a black priest. Finally he reaches Lesotho from where he manages to fly together with his family out of South Africa to publish his story.
